At Sheridan Healthcare, we know that cancellation rates can cause unnecessary stress to your hospital and its employees. At one South Florida anesthesia department, cancellation rates approaching 20 percent were causing scheduling conflicts and disruptions in service. Inefficiencies in flow of information, wide variance in daily case volumes and daily work processes were contributing to staff member stress.
The problem was defined and a team was formed. The team identified the issues offering the most fruitful opportunities for improvement, including organizing the general clutter of charts, collecting patient information farther upstream and reducing charting errors.
Three weeks after the necessary changes were made, the department improved average chart completion from five days before surgery to two days. Cancellation rates within 24 hours dropped to 5%, and massive waste and rework were eliminated.
