EFFECTIVE CREW RESOURCE MANAGEMENT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR STAGES

Good communication amongst hospital employees is key to minimizing surgical errors and complications in the operating room. At Memorial Healthcare System in Hollywood, Fla., a team of leaders, including chief of anesthesia Joseph Loskove, M.D., used management method Crew Resource Management to reduce errors.

Originally used by the airline industry, CRM engages the entire hospital team in process improvement and error reduction. It also encourages all members of the OR to speak up if they have a concern. The implementation of CRM at Memorial Healthcare took place in four stages:

  • Training – Seeking to educate physicians and staff on how to implement CRM
  • Observing – Monitoring processes currently in place, then improving and standardizing them
  • Building tools – Developing tools to reinforce the CRM training
  • Maintaining – Training new employees on CRM

 At Memorial Healthcare, the successful implementation of CRM was evidenced through safety culture survey scores. Communication openness at one OR increased by 48.1% and another by 40.5%.
